Awareness on Netiquette among High School Students


The Conscientization Programme on Netiquette aimed to create awareness among high school students about responsible and respectful online behavior.







INTRODUCTION

The Conscientization Programme on “Awareness on Netiquette among High School Students” was organized at NGPM HSS, Venchembu, with the objective of promoting responsible, ethical, and respectful online behavior among students. In the present digital era, the internet has become an integral part of students’ academic and social lives. Hence, it is essential to educate learners about proper online manners, cyber safety, and digital responsibility.

The programme aimed to sensitize students to the importance of respectful communication, privacy protection, and the responsible use of digital platforms. It served as an effective platform to guide students in understanding how their online actions can influence themselves and others.

The session commenced with a welcome address by Sister Sincy. This was followed by the presidential address by Father Sabu, who emphasized the need for discipline, responsibility, and ethical conduct in the digital world. The programme was formally inaugurated by Mrs. Swapna, Social Science Teacher, who highlighted the relevance of netiquette in modern education. An awareness class on netiquette was conducted, focusing on safe and respectful online practices. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Abhirami and Abhijith, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the event.



NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE

In today’s digital age, students spend a considerable amount of time online for learning, communication, and entertainment. While digital technology offers immense educational benefits, it also poses challenges such as cyberbullying, misuse of social media, invasion of privacy, and inappropriate online behavior. Therefore, there is a strong need to educate students about netiquette, which refers to the code of conduct governing responsible online behavior.

The Conscientization Programme was significant in guiding students towards becoming responsible digital citizens. Awareness of netiquette helps learners maintain respectful communication, build positive digital footprints, and protect themselves from online risks. This programme not only supported academic growth but also contributed to the overall moral and social development of students, preparing them to function ethically in a digital society.



OBJECTIVES

The major objectives of the programme were:

1. To create awareness among students about proper online behavior and digital manners.


2. To encourage responsible and respectful communication on digital platforms.


3. To educate students on the ethical use of the internet and social media.


4. To develop awareness regarding cyber safety, privacy protection, and digital responsibility.


5. To promote positive digital citizenship among high school students.


6. To help students understand the consequences of inappropriate online behavior.


7. To foster kindness, respect, and empathy in online interactions.



REFLECTION

The Conscientization Programme on Awareness on Netiquette among High School Students proved to be an enlightening and meaningful experience for both students and teachers. The programme provided an opportunity to discuss the importance of maintaining courtesy, responsibility, and empathy in online environments. Students became aware of how their digital actions can impact others and learned the value of respectful communication.

The session included engaging discussions and presentations that captured students’ interest. The resource persons explained the concept of netiquette using practical and relatable examples. Students actively participated by sharing their personal experiences related to online communication, making the session interactive and reflective. Common mistakes made on social media were discussed, along with positive and safe alternatives for digital interaction.

The programme also emphasized digital responsibility and cyber safety. Students learned about protecting personal information, avoiding harmful content, and understanding the consequences of online misconduct. This helped them realize that while the internet is a powerful tool, it requires moral awareness and accountability.

Overall, the programme successfully achieved its objectives. It encouraged students to reflect on their online behavior and inspired them to practice netiquette in their daily digital interactions. By the end of the programme, students pledged to uphold the principles of netiquette and contribute to a respectful and safe online community.



ROLES OF MEMBERS

Sister Sincy: Explained the concept of netiquette and highlighted the importance of discipline and good manners in online communication.

Father Sabu: Emphasized digital responsibility and guided students on the safe and respectful use of technology.

Abhirami: Presented key points on ethical online behavior and illustrated proper netiquette practices with examples.

Abhijith: Led interactive discussions and encouraged students to reflect on their online habits and adopt positive digital behavior.



CONCLUSION

The Conscientization Programme on Awareness on Netiquette among High School Students concluded successfully with active participation from the learners. The programme effectively enlightened students about the importance of online etiquette in the digital age. It helped them understand that politeness, respect, and responsibility are as essential online as they are in real-life interactions.

Through various discussions and activities, students gained a deeper understanding of cyber safety, privacy protection, and empathetic communication. The programme reinforced the idea that good netiquette contributes to a positive, safe, and inclusive digital environment.

In conclusion, the programme was a meaningful initiative that instilled a sense of digital responsibility among students.
